Summer Palais/ Satiricum

Prince Henry XI. Reuß (1722 - 1800) named his Summer Palais, built in Early Classic style „Maison de belle retraite", the house of beautiful refuge, which he inscribed on the pediment.  The former Orangerie and the public and private residential areas in the middle story are equipped with rich stucco decorations from the transitional period of the Rococo to Early Classicism.

Until 1918, the building was the summer residence of the Princes Reuß Elder Line.  In February, 1921, the „Foundation of the Elder Line of the House Reuß," in February, 1921, moved the princely library and the princely copperplate collection from the Upper Palace, and donated them to the state.  In 1922, the State Library and Copperplate Collection Greiz were opened in the Summer Palais as a museum.

In 1975 die National Caricature Collection of the DDR was founded with the name Greizer Satiricum. By 1989, a unique collection of DDR caricatures had developed.  Since 1990, prints of caricatures in the German-speaking realm are collected in this department.  The historical and contemporary caricature is, next to the library and the copperplate collection, the third main focus of the Museum.

Today, Satiricum exhibits take place in the Garden Ballroom, as do concerts and other events.  In the rooms of the Bel Etage one can view the old collection in constantly changing exhibits.  The library, the reading room, and the restoration workshop are located in the Mezzanine, the former residential area of the princely family.
