Summer Palais/ Satiricum

The charming Summer Palais in Greizer Park, constructed in the early Classic style between 1769 and 1779, is especially worth seeing.  Prince Henry XI. (1722-1800), who ordered the construction, named his summer residence "Maison de belle retrait" -- (the house of beautiful refuge) -- which is inscribed on the pediment.

Since 1922 the residence has housed the State Library and Copperplate Collection, a "Foundation of the Elder Line of the House of Reuß."  The most valuable portion of the collection, unique on the European continent, comes from the estate of the English Princess Elisabeth (1770-1840), who later became the Landgravine of Hesse Homberg.

In 1975, the Greiz SATIRICUM was founded as a separate department of the museum, on the condition that a broad spectrum of caricatures from the last 300 years would be included from the princely holdings.

In the summer months, exhibitions and Serenade Concerts of the Vogtland Philharmonic Orchestra of Greiz/Reichenbach are held in the Garden Ballroom of the former Summer Palais.
